- Abstract
- The construction field has a lower awareness of safety and health than other fields, while construction workers need to spend on mental effort while physical and technical working. Some issues such as poor climate conditions, and prolonged work hours result in physiological and psychological fatigue that lead to potential accidents and injuries. However, fatigue evaluation systems or accident prevention programs in time have not been developed for the construction industry. Thus, the present research tried to measure and quantify the fatigue of construction workers using ecological momentary assessment application and smartwatch sensor data. Approximately, 100 construction workers were classified into fatigue or non-fatigued groups, comparing the differences between the two groups of EMA score and fatigue-related factors observed in three working days. The result confirmed the existence of fatigue in construction workers while working. The fatigue group had a higher total EMA score than the non-fatigue group. The fatigue variation of two groups on working time was significant, in particular, 5 pm when the end time of the working, a 0.87 point difference of EMA score was recorded(fatigue group:3.21, non-fatigued group:2.34). Substantively, we suggested that ecological momentary assessment is a helpful tool for assessing the fatigue of construction workers and measuring fatigue-related variables.
