Abstract
Structural deterioration is a major problem when it considered for long-term performance. Maintenance of existing reinforced concrete (RC) structure is a real challenge due to insufficient funds and lack of pre-scheduled planning. The structure which is exposed to or in sea environment is initiated the corrosion after some period of service. The initiation of corrosion of any exposed structure depends on thickness of concrete, exposure environment, used protective scheme i.e. coating, inhibitor, patching etc. This paper focus on build an efficient and economical maintenance strategy through proper decisions for repair of construction. Since structures exposed to sea environments are mostly deteriorated by chloride, therefore, an appropriate maintenance strategy is required in order to safely sustain performance during service. Regarding appropriate repair strategies, cost has a huge influence on the decisions made by structure owners. Therefore, this paper discusses the Life Cycle Cost (LCC) of repair in order to maintain a structure service life. By introducing probability-based service life prediction using the Monte Carlo bootstrapping method, the most economically effective time for repair of a deteriorated structure is determined according to estimated repair, risks, and opportunity costs. We have studied the initiation of corrosion from 10-60% and found through probabilistic model that 20 mm patching for 40% initiation of corrosion is most economical and predictable than others. The patching of structure is easier and economical than other protective systems. © International Journal of Sustainable Building Technology and Urban Development.
