- Abstract
- The National Museum of Korea, as a representative museum in Korea, has been leading the changes in domestic museums in various aspects such as architecture, academics, exhibitions, and programs. This study aims to confirm the congruence between the purpose and tendency of spatial change through the names of expansion and renovation projects, and the actual spatial change shown in the data. Firstly, it identifies the history of relocation and expansion of the museum spaces presented in the annual report and websites, and the collected historical information, the names of expansion and renovation projects, discerned the trends in spatial changes over time. Secondly, through the architectural information presented in the annual report and additional literature research, quantitative data on the gross area and the areas allocated to different functions change during the period under study are collected. Then, the collected and calibrated data are organized, analysed, and visualized in graphs to the time series. The third step is to check and analyse whether the objectives and aspects of spatial change revealed in the names of the expansion and renovation projects are consistent with the changes in the actual quantitative area data. In addition, by computing and visualizing the amount of the time series changes in the area ratio of each functional area of each national museum, it identifies changes in the relationship between functional areas by year. Through this, the tendency of actual spatial changes is identified. In conclusion, except for the project to expand the storage, the purpose of the expansion of the National Museum of Korea was inconsistent with the actual spatial changes identified through the area data by year. Furthermore, the museums that did not experience a quantitative increase through the expansion show an increase in the office area by adjusting the internal spatial composition.
