- Abstract
- Experimental studies of thin-walled carbon steel single shear bolted connections with end distance and plate thickness as main variables have been performed to investigate block shear fracture behavior and the influence of curling on ultimate strength. As a result, bolted connections with short end distance and thick plate failed by typical block shear fracture, whereas curling occurred in thin plate-connections with long end distance and resulted in the strength reduction. In this study, thin-walled carbon steel double shear bolted connections with the same dimension as pre-tested single shear bolted connections were planned and tested in order to investigate the fracture mode and ultimate strength. Since curling was restrained by the thick plate on both sides, out of plane deformation was not observed in double shear specimens. Ultimate strengths of test results are compared with those of single shear bolted connections. Also, design strength and strength reduction are estimated quantitatively.
