대상의 상징화 과정에 따른 픽토그램 디자인 분류

Abstract

Pictogram, a sort of pictorial symbols that allow all the people in this planet to communicate with one another beyond linguistic boundaries like letter and language, becomes a critical means in modern communication. Pictogram is designed for everyone to understand its meaning easily, and also plays a role as good communication tool and guide. It is an essential sphere of information design and must be a sort of icon underscored materially these days under the influence of accelerated globalization. So this study examined pictogram as a realm of information design from a theoretical angle, and presented the principles of pictogram design based on case analysis. Pictogram, which visualizes certain information symbolically and helps understand its content immediately, is a common visual language around the world and has been further advanced owing to ever-developing traffic system. Now the pictogram is popularized ranging from our daily life to international events including the Olympics. The function of pictogram can be classified into guidance, instruction and symbolism. Jill Bulterd categorized symbol, i.e. pictogram design into similar, example, symbolic and arbitrary according to ways how to visualize objects. It is essential that pictogram design as a linguistic means in stead of letters should be made with special attentions to simplicity, implication and internationalism. Concretely speaking, unambiguous images must be suggested in terms of information to be delivered, and coloration in use should be controlled, while fonts or icons also must be consistent. Also, it is important for pictogram design to consider shape variety, necessity of letters and more as well. Even though there are lots of attempts to make changes to pictogram in Korea, it is recommended that formulated system for pictogram design should be established in order to leverage the efficiency of pictogram, which helps us enjoy comfortable living and safety.
