Abstract
Floating ring seals, crucial components in liquid rocket engine turbopumps for propellant leakage control, can impact rotordynamic behavior and stability. This review summarizes the fundamentals of floating ring seal operation, highlighting the transition from floating to lock-up behavior and the associated generation of reaction forces and cross-coupled stiffnesses. Recent research findings on seal design modifications to mitigate instability are discussed, including the use of grooved seals and the optimization of seal geometry. The review concludes by identifying areas for future research, emphasizing the need for advanced modeling, novel seal designs, and experimental validation to enhance seal performance and ensure the reliable operation of turbopump systems.
