Abstract

Submarine landslides are common in various sedimentary environments around the world. At the Ulleung basin in the East sea, submarine landslides scars are detected and with high possibility they were caused by earthquakes. This study analyzes the geomorphological features and soil properties of Hupo bank in the western part of Ulleung Basin. The sparker, chirp and multibeam ecosounder data were obtained simultaneously from the R/V Tamhae II at the prior study. The bathymetric survey shows a complex geomorphology of landslides with at least seven arcuate headwall scars. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the slope of the submarine landslide ranges from 4.5 to 10 degrees and has an average shear strength of 7 kPa.
