dc.description.abstractUse of cables in HVDC projects is increasing. HVDC cables can experience overvoltage which can deteriorate their insulation and eventually lead to failure. The insulation of HVDC cable must be designed to bear the prospective overvoltages without a failure. Cables can experience overvoltage due to fault in AC network, fault in DC line and lightning strikes on overhead sections of DC line. The characteristics and magnitude of these overvoltages depends on the converter topology. In order to understand the insulation design requirement for cables to be used in LCC and VSC HVDC systems, we have compared the overvoltages experienced by the cables according to the type of converter.-
