- Abstract
- .Despite the increasing number of dance studies based on practice, this study points out that there is still no clear methodological framework for academic research in practice-based research, and aims to become a precedent for academic research in dance practice. This paper defines various terms of practice-based research with a particular focus on 'practice as research'. To present specific examples of methodological applications, my doctoral research, 'Perform/Doc/Dance' demonstrates how practice and theory create new knowledge through the findings. Based on the 'practice as research' model established by Nelson in the UK, the paper discusses the research process through ‘know-what’ (theoretical knowledge), ‘know-how’ (knowledge gained through practice), and ‘know-that’ (establishing new knowledge). It also emphasizes the difference in the concept of 'practice' used in research as an artist versus research as a practitioner-researcher.
