- Abstract
- This paper presents a novel design strategy to improve torque density and torque ripple in PM-assisted synchronous reluctance machines (PMA-SynRMs) with ferrite magnets. Two PMA-SynRM models with asymmetrical rotor structures are proposed, in which the rotor flux magnetic circuit is separated by flux barriers into four parts. In both of the proposed models, the torque is improved by making the magnetic torque and the reluctance torque to reach their maximum values close to the same current angles. The frozen permeability method (FPM) is utilized to provide feasible insights into the separation of the torque components based on a 2-D finite element method (FEM). To highlight the superiority of the proposed models, a conventional PMA-SynRM model with symmetrical rotor structure is adopted for comparison under the same operating conditions.
