Abstract
In this paper, an optimal rotor shape design of an IPM machine is presented for improving the average torque by increasing the reluctance torque. On the rotor, the magnet placement, air barrier and air holes are optimized based on parametric approach using iterative optimization technique. The inductance of the q-axis varies which results in increase in the reluctance torque. In addition, the torque ripples of the machine are also minimized. Finite element analysis using FEM software JMAG is performed to investigate the average torque and torque ripple for comparison.
