- Abstract
- This study proposes a novel methodology to estimate hazardous spacing levels as performance measures of traffic safety. The proposed methodology combines two tasks. One task was to derive visibility distance and stopping sight distance based on both road weather information system and vehicle detection system data, respectively. The other task was to estimate a level of hazardous spacing index for predictive visibility distance and stopping sight distance using a K- nearest neighbors method. The outcome of this study would provide valuable safety-related information so that road users can actively avoid traffic accidents. The results would also be used to support advanced warning or monitoring system implementation for traffic safety enhancement.
