근대문학과 ‘평양’

Abstract

이 논문은 근대문학에서 재현되는 평양의 표상과 의미를 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 첫째로 평양은 과거의 역사를 지닌 고도이면서, 한편으로는 근대주체의 ‘희망’을 표상하는 지역이다. 이 희망이란, 전통/모더니티가 공존하는데서 발생하는 데, 평양은 유서깊은 역사적 고도이면서, 근대도시로서의 가능성을 동시에 지니고 있는 공간으로 설정된다. 둘째로, 대동강은 평양 태생의 문인들이 자신의 예술관을 확립하는 과정에서 예술적 충동을 불러일으키는 ‘감정’의 원천으로 작동한다. 대동강은 고도 평양의 자연풍광을 대표하면서, 예술가적 영감을 불러일으키는 원천, 예술가적인 감정을 가능케 하는 근원지로 기능해왔다. 셋째, 1930년대의 문학작품에서 평양은 여행자의 시선에 의해 재현된다. 식민지 조선 지식인의 평양 인식이 잘 드러난 작품으로는 이태준의 〈패강랭〉(1938)을 들 수 있다. 평양에 대한 그의 안타까움은 심미화된 대상의 부재에서 비롯된다. 제목에 대동강의 옛 이름인 패강을 붙였다는 것은 평양이라는 도시에서 근대도시성보다는 전통성에 주목하고 있음을 보여준다. 한편 『모던일본』은 1939년과 1940년에 두 번의 조선판을 내고 있는데 이중 1939년판은 평양에 대한 글들이 많이 실려 있다. 두 편의 소설에 등장하는 평양은 식민 정책의 문학적 재현이라고 할만큼 제국의 시선이 많이 드러나 있다. 근대 초기부터 일본인에 만들어지고 유통된 평양의 인식과 표상이 고스란히 답습되고 있는 바, 식민지 조선의 평양은 일본인 남성들에 의해 섹슈얼리티의 대상(기생)와 명승지라는 낭만적 여행의 전유물이거나, 전적지戰迹地, 박물관, 무한한 미래(공업도시로서의 평양)등 제국적 시선의 대상물로서 존재한다.

This paper has the objective to check the symbol and meaning ofPyongyang reproduced in the modern literature. First, Pyongyang is theancient city of the past history, and is the region presenting the hope ofNorth Korea’s Juche idea on the one hand. this hope occurs by coexistingwith the tradition/modernity, Pyongyang is established as the historicancient city and the space keeping the possibility of the modern city at thesame time. Second, Daedonggang is operated as the source of emotioncausing the artistic impulse in the course of establishing their own artisticviewpoints of literary persons born in Pyongyang. Daedonggang(Daedong-river) was functioning as the source capacitates the sourceful, artisticemotion causing the artistic inspiration representing the natural sceneries ofthe ancient city, Pyongyang. Third, Pyongyang is reproduced by thetourists eyes in the literary works of 1930s. The work ‘Paegangrang’ by LeeTae Joon (1938) may be taken where the perception of Pyongyang haswell been unfolded by Intellectuals of colony Chosun. His impatience with Pyongyang has been derived from the absence ofaesthetic object. It shows that the tradition rather than the modernurbanism in the city called Pyongyang has been noted in light of namingthe old name Paegang of Daedonggang(Daedong-river) in the subject. Meanwhile, there had been two times of Chosun edition in Modern Japan of 1939 and 1940, many writings for Pyongyang have been included inthe edition of 1939 out of these. The imperial eyes to be called as theliterary reproduction of colonial policy have been unfolded substantially inPyongyang appeared in two novels. The perception and symbol ofPyongyang made and circulated by the Japanese from the early part ofmodern times are imitated as it was, Pyongyang, the colony Chosun existsas the object of imperial eyes such as the object (Korean geisha) ofsexuality by Japanese males and the scenic resort to be called the exclusiveproperty of romantic tourist or the battlefield, museum, unlimited future(Pyongyang as the industrial city), etc.
