Abstract
The railway-car body consists of sandwich panels, and a sandwich panel is constructed with panels and ribs. The mass of the body can be reduced by changing the thicknesses of the panels and ribs. The thicknesses of the panels and the ribs are defined as the design variables. Size optimization is performed to reduce the mass of the railway-car body. Constraints are defined as that the maximum stress of the entire structure and the maximum displacement of the side sill should be less than the allowable stress and displacement. Topology optimization is performed to maximize the stiffness of the structure with specific mass constraints. The railway-car body is divided into six parts. Each part is defined as the design domain and topology optimization is carried out individually. The same loading and boundary conditions are utilized for size and topology optimizations.
