글로벌 미디어 기업의 사업 다각화 및 인수합병 전략 분석: 뉴스코퍼레이션을 중심으로

Abstract

본 연구는 2000년대 이후 디지털 전환이나 새로운 콘텐츠 기획･투자･유통･소비 환경으로의 변화가 개별 미디어 기업의 전략에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 살펴보기 위해 뉴스코퍼레이션의 사업 다각화 전략 및 이에 따른 콘텐츠 투자와 기업 인수합병전략을 검토했다. 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 뉴스코퍼레이션의 지리적 시장 다각화 정도를 2003년부터 2010년에 이르는 기간을 중심으로 살펴본 결과, 매출액 규모가 증가할수록 내수 시장 비율은 줄어드는 반면, 유럽 및 호주･기타 시장이 차지하는 비율은 증가했다. 둘째, 뉴스코퍼레이션의 사업 부문 다각화를 살펴본결과, TV 사업 부문은 큰 폭의 하락세가, 잡지와 출판 등은 매출 점유율 감소가 나타났다. 그러나 케이블 사업 부문은 지속적으로 시장이 성장했으며, 특정 영화의 성공으로 영화 부문도 다시 성장세가 나타나기도 했다. 셋째, 뉴스코퍼레이션이 사업 다각화를 추진하는 수단으로 활용한 인수합병 전략을 살펴보면, 기존 자산의 매각과 함께 신규 투자 분야에 대한 인수합병이 동시에 이루어지고 있으며, 미국뿐 아니라 해외 시장에서의 미디어 자산 인수 및 매각도 활성화되어 있다는 것을 알 수 있다.

This study explores both diversification and acquisition strategies of News Corporation from 2003 to 2010. The significant results are as follows: firstly, in terms of geographical diversification, News Corporation has expanded its overseas revenue based on growth of Europe and Australian markets rather than that of the U.S. Secondly, in terms of product diversification, News Corporation has increased revenue of cable channel and movie businesses. However, revenue of television and print businesses was decreased since 2003. Thirdly, acquisition strategy for News Corporation was focused on new growth business areas such as global financing information and digital media.
