시조에 나타난 사랑의 정의와 그 형상

Abstract

시대를 막론하고 문학의 가장 강력한 테마는 사랑이다. 이 논문에서는 시조를 대상으로 그러한 사랑이 어떻게 정의되고 있으며 또 어떻게 표출되고 있는지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 먼저 시조에 나타난 사랑을 정의하기 위해서는 사랑이란 단어로 시작되는 시조를 대상으로 삼았다. 이것은 두괄식 구조가 갖는 장점에 기인한 것으로, 사랑으로 작품을 시작함으로써 그만큼 그 의미가 강조된다고 보았기 때문이다. 시조에 나타난 사랑은 요컨대, 이중적 의미를 지향한다고 할 수 있다. 즉 한편으로는 인간의 힘으로는 어찌할 수 없이 받아들이는 ‘운명적 사랑’이라고 정의하는가 하면, 또 다른 한편으로는 인간의 의지대로 조작 가능한 ‘의지적 사랑’이라고 한다. 그런가 하면 영원토록 사멸하지 않을 ‘불멸의 사랑’으로 보는가 하면, 또 한편으로는 금세 사그라지고 마는 ‘덧없는 사랑’으로 정의하기도 한다. 사랑이 이처럼 다양하게 정의될 수 있다는 것은, 환언하면 사랑은 어느 하나로 정확하게 정의할 수 없는 다중적이며 모호한 것이기 때문이라고 할 수 있다. 이와 같은 사랑의 정의를 토대로 그것이 작품에서 어떻게 형상화 되는지 살펴보았다. 대상으로 삼은 것은 기녀시조와 함께, 조선후기의 사대부 작가인 이세보의 시조작품을 대상으로 하였다. 기녀와 이세보는 계층이 다른 만큼 표현해 내는 방식에는 차이가 있지만, 양자 모두 사랑을 슬픔으로 형상화했다는 점에서 일치한다. 아울러, 시조에서 사랑을 노래할 때 슬픔을 주로 하게 되는 것은, 문학이 이루어지는 이유에서 그 근거를 찾을 수 있다.

Regardless of time and era. literature's most popular and powerful theme is love. This essay investigates how this particular theme is presented and defined in Korea's literary form of Sijo. First, I have elected a particular Sijo of the same title (Love) as a subject of research. This is based on the positive qualities that a possesses, and the fact that starting with a literary piece with such a title would amplify the effect of the overall theme. In Sijo, love generally holds a dual meaning, 'destined love', which man has no control over, and 'intentional love', which man conveys with his own will. This duality can also be viewed as the division between 'immortal love', which lasts forever, and 'meaningless love', which is temporary. This versatility of 'love' proves that it is a subject that is multilateral and ambiguous. Based on this definition, this essay examines the figuration of love in Sijo pieces. The particular subjects of research were Ginyeo, and works by Lee, Sebo, a one that holds an important administrational position in the govening system of the late Chosun period. These works represent two highly different classes, and thus use expressional techniques that are unlike from one another, but share the main theme of sorrowful love. The fact that love in Sijo is mostly associated with sorrow is also related to the reasons why this particular type of literature became popular in its time.
