Abstract
이 연구에서는 시장수요측면에서 이동전화의 음성통화와 문자메시지 간의 관계를 실증적으로 밝히고자 하였다. 실증분석 결과, 두 서비스 간에는 대체관계가 있으며 교차가격탄력성은 0.057로 추정되었다. 가령 소비자의 압력으로 문자메시지 요금이 30원에서 10원으로 66.7% 하락한다면 음성통화의 수입은 3.8% 감소하게 됨을 의미한다. 즉, 문자메시지 요금이 급격히 낮아질 경우 음성통화 부문의 수입도 상당히 감소할 수 있음을 의미한다. 기업전략 차원에서 볼 때, 현실적으로 두 종류의 서비스를 동시에 제공할 수밖에 없는 사업자로서는 일종의 제살깎아먹기(carnivalization) 같은 현상이 발생할 수 있다는 점을 염두에 둬야 한다. 요금규제정책 측면에서는 두 서비스가 경쟁관계에 있다는 점을 알고, 향후 정부는 이동전화 음성통화 요금 결정시 문자메시지 요금도 같이 고려하여 결정하여야 할 것이다.
The purpose of this study is to find out empirically the relationship between voice telephony and short message service (SMS) in the Korean mobile telephony market. Empirical results show that the two services are substitutable in terms of market demand. The cross price elasticity of demand for voice telephony in the Korean mobile telephony market is 0.057. If the price of SMS decreases from 30 won to 10 won by 66.7% owing to the proactive support of the civil society organizations, the revenue of voice telephony market is expected to decrease by 3.8%. That is, if the price of SMS decreases drastically, the revenue of voice telephony market may decrease considerably. In the aspect of business strategies, because service providers in mobile telephony markets have to provide consumers with both voice telephony and SMS, they should take the possibility of carnivalization into consideration in the mobile telephony markets. In the aspect of regulation policies, the government authorities should take both mobile telephony price and SMS price into account simultaneously when they determine the price of mobile telephony.
