dc.description.abstract | In the last decade, we are witnessing an enormous increase in Computer- Mediated Communication(CMC). More and more interactions take place via e-mail, and chat. Early research argues that text based forms of CMC lose nonverbal cues such as facial expressions, gestures or tone of conversation. However, more recent research argues that communicators can use emotional icons(emoticons) to express nonverbal cues missing in CMC. Despite their potential importance in CMC, very few studies have been conducted to understand the usage and effect of emoticons in CMC. This paper aims to explore college student’s use of emoticon in their mobile text messaging. The study found that (1) college students used emoticon to make conversation soft and short, and to obtain emotional attachment and entertainment, and (2) the use of emoticon was positively related to sense of being together in mobile text messaging. These findings suggested that emoticon functioned as a facilitator of emotional expression and had an impact on relational communication. Based on findings limitations and direction for future study were discussed. | - |
