- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to present an analysis of the factors contributing to fluency in first language speaking. For this purpose we investigated the spontaneous utterances produced by 60 native speakers of Korean. The analysis was based on physical measurement of speaking rates, MLU(mean length of utterances), and frequency of stuttering of each subject. Statistical methods applied to this study were frequency, average, t-test, ANOVA, correlation, regression. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) The average adult's speaking rate is 6.12 to 6.99 syllables per second. (2) The mean length of utterances on average is 3.26 to 4.55. (3) The stuttering utterances generally made up 14 to 29 percent and is likely to increase in case the mean length of utterances increases. The result of this study will contribute to the oral fluency evaluation of the native speakers of Korean.
