<신세기 에반게리온> 재고 - 성장을 꿈꾸는 반(半)주체 -

Abstract

일본의 전후 애니메이션 역사에서 제2차 애니메이션붐을 촉발시킨 <신세기 에반게리온>은 오타쿠 감독이 만든 그야말로 오타쿠적인 애니메이션임에도 불구하고 이후 이른바 ‘에바 신드롬’이라 칭해진 광범위한 사회적 반향을 일으키면서 지금까지도 인구에 회자되고 있다. 본고의 목적은 <신세기 에반게리온> 캐릭터들의 ‘정신분열적 의사소통 양식’이라든가 주체의 부재 표상이 애바 붐 혹은 에바 신드롬을 일으킨 중요한 요인이라고 보면서, 정신분석학적, 종교적, 일본문화론적 관점에 입각하여 “성장하지 않으면서도 성장을 꿈꾸는 반(半)주체의 이야기”로서 <신세기 에반게리온>에 대한 재해석을 시도하는 데에 있다. 이때 특히 라캉적 개념과 ‘아마에’(甘え) 및 ‘모노노아와레’(物哀れ) 등의 일본문화코드를 참조할 것이다.

Neon Genesis Evangelion, a Japanese mecha genre animation produced by Gainax and Tatsunoko Production and directed by Hideaki Anno, was broadcast on TV Tokyo from October 1995 to March 1996. This otaku-oriented animation, which triggered the second animation boom in postwar Japanese society, has been discussed and praised by many people ever since. Known as the “Eva syndrome,” Evangelion invokes many psychological themes. The episode titles, titles of music used in the series, and other repeated phrases are based on psychological concepts derived from Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan. Furthermore, the themes in Evangelion are often drawn from religious symbols, such as Judaism, Christianity, Gnosticism, and Kabbalism. The purpose of this essay is to reinterpret Evangelion as a story about the half-subject that dreams growth despite its inability to grow, from the perspective of psychoanalysis and Nihonbunka-ron (discourse on Japanese culture). In the process, I aim to reevaluate its religious motives. In doing so, I will give special attention to Lacanian concepts, such as Amae, Monono-aware, etc.
