Abstract
As a result of increase in environmental awareness, there has been a major market transformation and a shift in perception of the sustainable buildings, and along with the toughing of the energy performance requirement from the government policies and various financial incentives, the statistics on demand for green certifications such as ENERGY STAR, LEED and BREEAM has increased exponentially. With this shift in perception of sustainability there have also been a huge spike of interest not only in new construction but also in retrofitting of existing buildings. Based on McGraw Hill Construction's Market Report existing building retrofit market is more than 60 percent of all construction projects, and records from the LEED-EB (Existing Building) shows that the registration and certification of LEED-EB has increased rapidly from mid 2000's. Existing building stock accounts for more than 98% all building stocks in the developed world and many of the existing buildings were built before there were stringent regulations and measures on the energy performance of the building. As a result, market for retrofitting existing building is strong and the need for researching ways to implement sustainable design ideas in retrofitting the existing building stock is increasing.
