Abstract
This paper presents a dual-stator vernier/permanent magnet synchronous hybrid machine for variable speed application such as washing machine. The proposed machine has two stators and a sandwiched rotor the outer stator works as a normal permanent magnet synchronous machine whereas the inner stator works as a vernier machine. In low speed operation of 300 rpm, only the inner stator with 17 magnet pole pairs is working and the outer stator is turned off. Therefore the machine provides high torque and high efficiency at low speed. At high speed operation of 1500 rpm, the inner stator is turned off and the outer stator is working with 4 pole pairs of outer stator armature winding and 4 pole pairs of permanent magnets. Therefore, the machine combines the advantages of a permanent magnet synchronous machine and a vernier machine in a single topology suitable for variable speed applications.
