- Abstract
- The NF-kappa B family of transcription factors is a critical regulator for the cell survival by inducing the expression of anti-apoptotic genes. In this study, we found that a seventy percent ethanol extract of Tamarindus indica L. (TIE) strongly inhibits both IL-1 beta- and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced IKK beta and NF-kappa B activation without affecting the activity of IL-1 receptor associated kinase 1 (IRAK1), which functions upstream of IKK beta. In addition, FIE had no effect on the LPS-induced c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) or p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) activation. Furthermore, TIE clearly reduced the viability of NF-kappa B-dependent lymphoblastoid cell line (LCL) without adversely affecting the viability of NF-kappa B-independent HeLa cells. Thus, TIE targets IKK beta to inhibit NF-kappa B activation and LCL viability.
