Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the perceived needs for a project-based learning (PBL) course among students majoring in English and their opinions on what they perceive to be potential project topics for students majoring in English. Data were collected from a needs analysis questionnaire distributed to 82 undergraduate students majoring in English linguistics and literature at a university in Korea. Findings showed that participants perceived English oral communication ability to be an important factor affecting employment following graduation. When asked regarding the implementation of PBL in their courses, they showed highly positive reactions as they felt that PBL could offer opportunities for students to prepare for employment and the workplace. Other responses showed that they felt PBL could promote the use of English in the classroom as well as learner autonomy. In terms of areas for PBL, topics related to tourism, English education, and business were propsed and these areas correspond to minors that these students chose to pursue. Findings also show that students have a strong desire to use English in the classroom and felt that practicality and integration should be considered when developing curriculum for undergraduate English majors. Implications and suggestions for using PBL for English majors are discussed.
