Abstract
The purpose of this study was to find out how to cope with school violence based on the role of witnesses during the school violences. Ten female students attending high school in Seoul city participated in this study. Research data were obtained from in-depth interviews with individual participants and results were derived from using the content analysis method. The results were categorized as following, first, experience as witnesses; second, importance of defender role; third, punishment for attacking students; fourth, necessity of school violence prevention education; fifth, role of school violence measures autonomy committee. The results of this study provided concrete information on the importance of the role of defender in the direct intervention of school violence prevention and the corresponding altruistic helping behavior. This study pointed out that stronger measures are necessary for the perpetrators to be more effective in preventing school violence and that regular school violence prevention education could be used to change the perception of school violence and cope with school violence. In addition, it was suggested that the role and function of the School Violence Autonomy Committee should be recognized by the students and if it was operated properly, it could be a great contribution to prevent and cope with school violence. This study investigated the perceptions and needs of school violence prevention and countermeasures from the perspective of the surrounding person who experienced school violence in a female high school. The results of this study were meaningful in that they set the direction for practical and effective prevention and coping with school violence.
