Abstract
In contrast to conventional nanomaterials, the outstanding and unique properties of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have attracted interest for next generation materials and promising applications. This review focuses on 2D nanomaterials, including graphene, hexagonal-boron nitride, transition metal dichalcogenides, metal oxide nanosheets, etc., with emphasis on artificial nanostructuring and the development of heterostructures to create novel functionalities or to significantly enhance existing functionalities. We highlight their structures, synthesis, and characterizations for various applications, such as electronics, optoelectronics, catalysts, and sensors. Their potential applications and future prospects are also discussed.
