Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate how the satisfaction of psychological needs perceived by students participating in university physical education classes influenced on their motivational regulations. Research participants (N=234) participated in tennis, golf, bowling, and badminton subject classes for a semester and completed the questionnaires to measure their perceived psychological needs and motivational regulations at the end of the semester in 2016. Multiple linear regression analyses tested associations between psychological needs and motivational regulations. Regression analyses showed that the satisfaction of three psychological needs was significant determinants of motivational regulations such as intrinsic motivation and identified regulation. The results highlight the importance of instructor supportive behaviors to meet the psychological needs while teaching for university physical education classes, which then lead to sustained engagement and improved learning effect for university students.
