- Abstract
- Korean traditional sports ‘Taekkyon’ was finally confirmed as an official sports event for the Korean National Sports Festival on February 11, 2020. This research examined the competition records of Taekkyon over the past 9 years (the 92nd – 100th Korean National Sports Festival) of its participation as a demonstration sport. Korean Sport & Olympic Committee and Korea Taekkyon Federation provided the competition records of Taekkyon for analysis. This research examined the performances and problems of competition records through the status of registered athletes in each city and province, weight class of men and women, game rules, and results. The following proposal can be made to revitalize Taekkyon which will be in the 101st Korean National Sports Festival as an official event. First, the stabilization of the federation should be the first priority for the success of the Taekkyon match in the national sports festival, since the stable Korea Taekkyon Federation will directly lead to a successful competition. Second, it is necessary to overcome the concentration of Taekkyon players in certain cities and provinces, especially with an urgent need to cultivate them in Gangwon-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Jeju-do through the federation’s support to reduce the gaps. Strategic support policies must be established to reconstruct Taekkyon Associations and train players in Gangwon-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Jeju-do. Third, it is necessary to distinguish between the student varsity team and non-varsity team as Taekkyon is approved as an official event in the national sports festival. To foster high school elite players and to establish Taekkyon-related majors and departments in universities, it is necessary to have medium-to long-term phased plans.
