자기결정성이론의 외국어 교육 적용 방안에 대한 탐색과 고찰

Abstract

학생들의 학습 및 학습동기를 촉진시키는 자율적이고 즐겁고 의미 있는교실 환경의 조성은, 거의 모든 교수자들에게 어렵고 도전적인 일이다. 자기결정성이론(Self-determination theory)은 이와 같은 수업 환경 조성에 도움이 될 수 있는 이론적 틀을 제공한다. 이에 본 연구는 자기결정성이론에 주목하여, 자기결정성이론의 원리가 어떻게 외국어 교육에 적용될수 있는지 탐색하고 방향성을 제시하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 자기결정성이론의 핵심을 개관하였다. 그리고 외국어 학습에서의 내재 동기(intrinsic motivation)와 자율적 외재 동기(autonomous extrinsic motivation) 및 내재화(internalization)에 대해 고찰하였다. 마지막으로 외국어 학습자의 자율성, 유능성, 관계성 욕구를 촉진하는 외국어 수업 환경 조성에 방향성을 구체화한 실천적인 수업 모형을 제시하였다. 궁극적으로 본 연구는, 자기결정성이론의 핵심 원리와 방대한 선행 연구 결과들이 보다 자율적이고 효과적인, 외국어 학습 동기의 활성화 및 외국어 수업 환경의 조성에 유용한 도움이 될 수 있기를 기대한다.

Challenge for many foreign language instructors is to provide students with an enjoyable, interesting, and meaningful classroom environment that can richly support their learning and autonomous motivation. Self-determination theory provides a framework for how foreign language instructors can do this, so the purpose of this article is first to overview self-determination theory and then to provide specific examples of how this theory can be implemented in a foreign language course. In so doing, the article seeks to help foreign language instructors connect with self-determination theory and to put its principals into effective classroom practice.
