중학생들의 자유학기제 경험에 대한 질적연구

Abstract

이 연구는 자유학기 중학생들의 경험을 자유학기제 목표에 기반하여 학습, 진로, 학교생활 측면을 통합적으로 이해하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 경험과정에 대한 심층연구에 적합한 합의적 질적연구 방법을 활용하여 총 8명의 학생들을 대상으로 자유학기제 기간에 겪은 경험을 분석하였다. 수집된 자료를 분석한 결과 ‘수업에 대한 만족감과 부담감’, ‘진로개발에 대한 자극과 아쉬움’, ‘학교생활에의 긍정적 영향’이라는 3개 영역에서 13개의 하위범주와 29개의 핵심개념이 도출되었다. 결론적으로 중학생들은 자유학기제에 학습과 관련된 경험을 가장 폭넓고 강하게 인식하고 있었으며 이러한 경험 속에서 상호 모순된 인식 및 감정들을 확인할 수 있었다. 이외에도 진로와 관련된 다양한 경험을 하고 있으며 이에 대해서도 양가감정을 보이고 있었다. 그러나 학교생활 측면 특히 또래나 교사와의 관계에 있어서는 매우 긍정적인 경험을 하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이 연구결과를 토대로 자유학기제를 학생의 경험에 기반하여 이해하고 학생들의 실제적 경험의 질을 향상시켜 자유학기제가 한 단계가 도약하기 위한 방향을 논의하는 데 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

The purpose of this study is to have a comprehensive understanding of student experiences during the free-learning semester. We interviewed eight students on their free-learning semester experiences and analyzed them using a consensual qualitative research method that is considered appropriate for an advanced research on the experience process. Through the analysis, thirteen sub-categories and twenty-nine key concepts were identified from the three main categories--“satisfaction and pressure from learning”, “career development and drawbacks”, “positive effects on school life.” In summary, learning-related experiences during the free-learning semester left the most intensive and powerful impression on the middle school students, and we were able to observe students’ contradictory perceptions and emotions arising from these experiences. In addition, the students went through diverse experiences related to their career development while showing ambivalent emotions. However, it was evident that it helped students to have a very positive experience with their school life, especially their relationships with the peers and teachers. We hope this research will make a positive contribution to the policy discussion on improving the quality of students’ experiences by providing a better understanding of the free-learning semester from students’ perspectives.
