- Abstract
- Abstract The purpose of this review was to evaluate occupants’ ventilation behaviour in homes with mechanical ventilation systems. Even though mechanical ventilation systems can reduce exposure to outdoor particles and also can improve IAQ more efficiently compared with natural ventilation, most of occupants did not use mechanical fans for ventilation. They cited elevated energy costs, difficulty of operation, unaware, and fan noise as the primary reasons for not using the mechanical ventilation fan. It was found from the previous researches that occupants prefer opening windows for ventilation and the ventilation system is operated only for a few days throughout a year. As the ventilation systems are intermittently operated
in homes, a large amount of airborne particles may deposit to the supply duct surfaces when the mechanical fan is not operated, and therefore the deposited particles may resuspend into ventilation airflow when the mechanical fan is turn on. In aspects of maintenance, it is clear that airborne particle deposition in the ventilation systems affects occupant health and exposures.
