- Abstract
- This study examines the impact of neighborhood physical environment on night-time pedestrian volume in the city of Seoul, Korea. Using the 2009 Night-time Pedestrian Flow Survey data conducted by Seoul city government, we developed three multi-variate regression models for night-time pedestrian volume. The results indicate that street-level physical environment and surrounding land use show statistically significant associations
with night-time pedestrian volume. In particular, sidewalk width, number of bus stations, pedestrian-oriented and bike-pedestrian multi-use streets show positive associations with night-time pedestrian volume. In contrast, total floor areas of low-rise multi-family housing and the apartment show negative associations with night-time pedestrian volume. The result of this study indicates that urban design and public policies should consider street-level physical environment and surrounding land use to improve night-time pedestrian walking environment.
