Abstract
and 44.3% of female students were underweight, 51.7% were normal, and 4% were overweight. In perception of body image, 27.1% of the underweight, 69.9% of the normal weight, and 2.9% of the overweight male students recognized correctly and 66.2% of the underweight, 57.8% of normal weighted, and 0% of the overweight recognized their weight category correctly. Thirty nine point five percents of the male and 48.9% of the female students preferred normal body image, and body image preference was significantly different according to BMI (p<.001). Male students showed higher satisfaction on their current body image compared to that of female students. For female students, their level of satisfaction decreased as their BMI level increased (p<.001). Most of the students were concerned weight control. Forty four point eight percents of male students wanted to maintain their current weight and 43.1% of them wanted it to keep good health, while 73.4% of the female students wanted to lose the weight and 34.8% of them wanted to get good appearance. Dietary self-efficacy level according to BMI was mostly marked as‘high’for both male and female students (61.7%, 58.6%), while the overweight students were relatively lowered compared with underweight and normal students. Eighty three point eight percents of the male and 96.1% of the female students answered that they feel the necessity of nutritional education. For the reason of nutritional education, most of the students chose the answer of‘to achieve proper diet’. For students with high or medium dietary self-efficacy level, most of them answered that the necessity of nutritional education was ‘moderately’ or ‘very much’. While low dietary selfe-fficacy level students answered that they do not need it. In this study many of the students did not recognize their body image correctly. Female students especially did not satisfy with their current body image and would like to lose their weight, and students with low dietary self-efficacy did not feel necessity of nutritional education. These results suggested that proper nutritional education with practical program and proper object group was highly required for middle school students to improve satisfaction level of their current body image and to increase their dietary self-efficacy level. The purpose of this research was to investigate the perception of body image, the weight control, the dietary self-efficacy level and the cognition of the necessity for nutritional education of middle school students in Seoul. The survey was conducted on 341 students
