- Abstract
- The study was conducted to investigate the effect of mother's employment status, and age, type of jobs, and time to leave home of working mother on dietary habits and behaviors in 256 middle school students(114 boys and 144 girls). The percentage of employed mother was higher than that of non-employed mother, and there was significantly more boys than girls in group of employed mother. Students with employed mother ate breakfast alone significantly more than those with non-employed mothers. Students with employed mother didn't eat dinner because of being full after having snacks and eat significantly more delivered foods (including dining out) for dinner than those with non-employed mothers. Students with employed mother bought snacks and liked junk food (fast food, instant food) significantly more than those with non-employed mothers. In addition, students with employed mother watched TV while having meals and drunk more soft drink than those with non-employed. mothers. Students with mothers who worked at office ate significantly more vegetables than those with service workers. Students with mothers of < 45 years old had breakfast more frequently than those with mothers of ≥ 45 years old, while less frequently consumed three meals per day. In conclusion, mother’s employment status was the most important factor influencing dietary habits and behaviors of students. Therefore, students with employed mother's may required special attention for nutrition education.
