- Abstract
- This paper describes the causes and background that Seoul was determined as the capital in the early era of the Joseon Dynasty based on the Chronicles of the Dynasty. At that time, many bureaucrats still lived in Songdo that was the capital of the Goryeo Dynasty replaced by Joseon. They resisted to transfer the capital implicitly and explicitly. Some bureaucrats rationalized their viewpoints depending on Feng Shui while some other ones quoted Confucian spatial philosophy. Kings of the dynasty repulsed the retainers' several opposite views. After all, the dynasty transferred the capital to Seoul. The site selection looked very reasonable unlike moderners' preconception. Rational locational factors such as geographical location, accessibility in land and marine transportation, and defense without difficulty were considered critically in the site selection process.
