- Abstract
- The Musée des Monuments Français is the former convent of the Petits-Augustins, one of the depots of art confiscated from religiousbuildings that were suppressed during the French Revolution. Under the direction of Alexandre Lenoir, this old convent-cum-depot was converted into an early national museum in France. Established in the midst of inconsistent conflicting purposes of destruction andpreservation during the Revolution, this museum has a unique characteristic of having been short-lived, only from 1795 to 1816. This studyaddresses that the museum, as a non-religious architecture, is related to the idea of the sacred, and it examines the process of how Lenoir, the founder of the museum at the time, made the museum to be sacralized by rescuing and displaying confiscated artworks.
