프랑스 기념비 박물관으로 전환된 프티-오귀스탱 수도원에 대한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 프랑스 대혁명 당시 프티-오귀스탱 수도원에서 박물관으로 전환된 사례인 프랑스 기념비 박물관이 조성되는 과정을 분석하면서, 특히 기존 수도원에 보관되어 있던 성물의 기능적 전환에 집중한다. 프랑스 대혁명이 발발하면서, 수도원에 귀속되어 있던 성물은 정치 혁명 속에 종교적 위상을 박탈당하고 ‘반달리즘’이라는 파괴의 대상으로 격하된다. 그러다 문화재라는 새로운 기능을 부여받고 보존의 대상으로 전환되기 시작한다. 최종적으로 예술품으로서의 변용적 전시를 통해 대중 앞에 드러난다. 아울러 이들이 귀속되는 건물 또한 종교 시설, 임시 보관소, 그리고 예술 전시 공간으로 변용된다. 뿐만 아니라 1816년 폐관된 프랑스 기념비 박물관은 오늘날 파리 에꼴 데 보자르의 건물로서 기능하고 있는데, 그 중 프티-오귀스탱 수도원부터 존재했던 성당과 경당이 여전히 예술 전시 공간으로 존속하고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 이와 같은 종교 건축에서 예술 전시 공간으로의 변용을 또 다른 신성화라는 관점으로 조명한다.

This study analyzes the establishment of the Musée des Monuments Français in the context of the French Revolution, with a specific focuson the functional transformation of the holy relics that were housed in the Couvent des Petits-Augustins. During the French Revolution, theCouvent’s religious relics were stripped of their sacred status and relegated to destruction or vandalism. However, they were subsequentlyrepurposed as cultural assets and transformed into objects for preservation. Through a transfigurative exhibition, these objects were introducedto the public as works of art, while the building was converted from a religious site to a temporary dépôt and eventually an art exhibitionspace. Although the Musée des Monuments Français closed in 1816, its legacy lives on today through the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris,which continues to use the former Couvent’s Chapelle des Louanges and église as exhibition spaces. This transfiguration of religiousarchitecture into an art exhibition space highlights the concept of art as another sacralization.
