듀이의 ‘교육적 경험’의 의미, 속성, 조건에 대한 논의

Abstract

듀이는 ‘교육적 경험’의 중요성과 특징에 대해서는 논의하고 있지만 ‘교육적 경험’의 정의에 대해서는 제대로 언급을 하고 있지 않고 있다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 듀이의 ‘교육적 경험’의 의미, 속성, 조건을 밝히고자 한다. 첫째, 듀이의 ‘교육적 경험’의 의미에 대해서는 기존의 논의를 종합해서 “단순한 반복이 아닌 반복되면서 성장하는 경험(경험의 계속성)”으로서 “학습자의 이전 경험 속에 들어 있는 사물들이나 사건들과 지적인 관련(경험의 상호작용성)”을 맺고 있는 “잘 통합되고 하나의 통일성을 지닌 경험(하나의 경험)” 경험으로 보았다. 둘째, '교육적 경험'의 속성으로서 '하나의 경험', '경험의 계속성', '경험의 상호작용성'을 고찰했다. 셋째, ‘교육적 경험’의 조건에 대해서는 충동과 욕구로부터 출발, 교사의안내자 및 촉진자로서 역할, 실제적인 일 경험, 가정-학교-사회의 연계를 제시했다. 본 연구는 '교육적 경험'을 듀이의 저작인 『경험으로서 예술』, 『경험과 교육』과 함께 '실험학교'의 실천과 연결시켜 살펴보았다. 향후 ‘교육적 경험’에 대해 이론적인 논의와 함께 실천적인 시도들도 이어질 수 있기를 기대해 본다.

This study aims to highlight the meaning, attributes, and conditions of Dewey’s “educational experience.” First, by synthesizing existing discussions on the meaning of Dewey’s “educational experience,” this study presents it as a “well-integrated and unified experience (an experience)” that is “not merely repeated but grows with repetition (continuity of experience)” and has an “intellectual connection with objects or events in the learner’s previous experience (interaction of experience).” Second, “an experience,” “continuity of experience,” and “interaction of experience” were examined as attributes of “educational experience.” Third, the conditions for “educational experience” included impulses and desires, the teacher’s role as a guide and facilitator, practical work experience, and home-school-society connections.
