Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of self-discrepancy and the need for approval on the relationship between perfectionism(self-oriented, socially prescribed) and academic procrastination among college students. Data from 424 male and female college students were analyzed, and the main findings are as follows. First, the stronger the socially-prescribed perfectionism tendency, the higher the academic procrastination, and the mediating role of self-discrepancy and need for approval in the relationship between self-oriented perfectionism and academic procrastination and between socially-prescribed perfectionism and academic procrastination. Second, self-discrepancy and the need for approval mediated the relationship between self-oriented perfectionism and academic procrastination. It can be concluded that self-oriented perfectionism, which has been classified as an adaptive trait, leads to maladaptive academic procrastination through self-discrepancy and the need for approval. Based on the findings of this study, the implications of helping college students with perfectionism to explore and understand their perceived levels of self-discrepancy and need for approval when they complain of academic procrastination are discussed, along with limitations of the study and suggestions for future research.
