- Abstract
- This study conducted analysis of Portrait of Childhood by Kim Ju-yeong based on the idea that understanding of characters provides fundamental and essential clues to novel interpretation. The novel has eminent features of growth novel, which are well revealed in the process of "Mudo" overcoming his Oedipus Complex.
Portrait of Childhood tells an epic story containing Oedipus Complex. The love desire for the mother in the absence of the father escalates to a sex murder between Park Sul, the handyman at the brewery, and Chilseong's father of the slaughterhouse. In the epic story, Mudo's actions take the center stage in the motive of "murdering father." The other venue Oedipus Complex was manifested was the conflicts between the brothers over the mother's love. Mudo does nothing at the sight of his brother's death and thus becomes Cain's descendent.
However, he goes through the maturing process by finding meanings in the attitude to search for truth and in the attitude toward "shame" of the women including his mother. Realizing that individuals seeking after truth naturally have freedom and solitude at the same time, he attempts to hit the road away from his mother. Educational implications were thus found in the thinking process of the character in Portrait of Childhood.
