Abstract

This study was conducted to identify the mediating effects of self-silencing, as moderated by self-compassion in the relationship between self-differentiation and marital satisfaction among married couples with young children. A questionnaire was administered to 250 married couples with young children under 6 years old in Korea, and 245 copies in total were used for analysis after excluding 5 responses due to insufficient data. The data collected in this study were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 and SPSS PROCESS Macro version 4.2. The main results are as follows. First, the lower the level of self-differentiation, the higher the self-silencing and the lower the marital satisfaction. The lower the self-silencing and the higher the self-compassion, the higher the marriage satisfaction. Second, the mediating effects of self-silencing and self-silencing moderated by self-compassion were found in the relationship between self-differentiation and marital satisfaction. These results confirmed that reducing self-silencing and improving self-compassion are useful for couples who experience low marital satisfaction due to low levels of self-differentiation.
