Abstract
This study aimed to examine whether self-distancing serves as an effective technique for alleviating state anxiety and enhancing self-reflection among novice counselors. A total of 60 counselors with less than one year of experience was randomly assigned to one of three groups: a self-distancing group, a self-immersion group, and a control group. Participants were asked to read a scenario designed to induce anxiety and then recall the experience, with those in the experimental groups guided to do so from either a self-distanced or a self-immersed perspective. To reinforce the recall method, a structured writing task was included. The results revealed that the self-distancing group showed significantly lower levels of state anxiety and significantly higher levels of self-reflection compared to the control group. These results suggest that self-distancing may be an effective intervention strategy for emotional regulation and self-reflection in novice counselors. Importantly, the observed effects emerged even through brief intervention, indicating the practical potential for incorporating self-distancing techniques into counselor training programs.
