Abstract
In a fast changing world, the need for global citizenship education is greater than ever. This article explores secondary students’ perceptions and attitudes towards global citizenship in Korea, Indonesia, and Thailand. Building upon the previous large scale cross-national survey studies of students’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes in citizenship, this study used a multi-site, case study approach using interviews as a main method. The in-depth interviews with a total of 35 students from six schools in three countries were analyzed in terms of their perceptions and attitudes towards global citizenship. Student participants in this study, supporting the literature on Asian citizenship, demonstrated more similarities than differences in their perceptions and attitudes towards global citizenship. However, the interviews also demonstrated diverse student reasoning lying under such similarities, which could be presumed to be national characteristics. Based on the analysis results, two implications for future global citizenship education curriculum planning and implementation are noted. First, global citizenship education should be pursued across school curriculum with stronger ties to student real life, not limited to one or two school subjects. Second, national peculiarities clearly demonstrated in this study should be considered in curriculum planning and explored to a further extent.
