- Abstract
- Baek Do-Gi is not a writer who has been emblazed as being important writer in the history of Korean literature. That may be because literary projection in Baek Do-Gi’s novels is behind in quality compared to that of writers in his time and he is the writer of Christian religion-oriented novel. However, Baek Do-Gi shows different style like no other Christian novel and this study has significance as he proves the potential of Christian novel in Korea. This paper proposes two approaches to understand Baek Do-Gi’s work.
The study on Baek Do-Gi's novel should be based on his life and background. His novels present strong national consciousness and memory of his father who was willing to become a martyr during the war, is one of mainstays of his novel. In addition, his life story of being a minister after graduating one of most progressive theological schools in Korea should be one of important yardstick in understanding of his novels. Therefore, the present writer studied how such marks of life history, in other words, experiences from childhood to adolescence are reflected on his early novels and based on this, proved that the underlying perception of history and reality-oriented consciousness showed in Baek Do-Gi’s novel are created in a close relationship with his life history. As a result, Baek Do-Gi’s novel has significance in the history of literature as it has both uniqueness of being the potential of Korea’s Christian novel and universality of literature, which is a reaction to the human existence, history and reality. In this paper, the present writer aimed to propose the necessity of studying Baek Do-Gi’s novel by casting light upon the literary significance of his early short stories.
