Abstract
Victimization studies have relied on lifestyle/routine activities theories to explain the differential risk of victimization. In addition, they present several other individual and neighborhood factors to explain victimization in youth. This study applies those factors to explain victimization from malicious messages on internet bulletin boards and hypothesizes that adolescent’s risky activities such as internet using time and anonymity, the level of collective efficacy (cohesion/trust and informal social control) on internet site, lower self-control, social bond with parents, and past experiences of the posting of malicious message will affect the risk of victimization. By using data from 576 male and female middle school students in Seoul, this study finds that informal social control has the most strong impact on victimization. In addition, results show that youths in low level of parental bond and self-control are more likely to experience victimization. However, this study shows that risky activities and prior experiences of malicious message have little influence on victimization.
