- Abstract
- This study tries to find causes of juvenile delinquency on cyber spaces. Based on the characteristics of cyber spaces, this study provides some relevant predictors and attempts to assess their effects on cyber-delinquency. This study focuses on the effects of cyber-self, attitude favorable to cyber-delinquency, and fun as motives of delinquency and also assesses some factors of relationships with parents, school failure, depression, and lower self-control. Using data from 1113 both male and female middle/high school students in Seoul, 2003, this study tests several hypotheses. Results show that cyber-self has the most strong impacts on juvenile delinquency on cyber space. Its effect is more stronger on new cyber delinquency and internet addiction than on traditional type of minor on-line delinquency. This study also reveals that both attitide favorable to cyber-delinquency and fun as motives are important factors in explaining on-line delinquency. In addition, the effect of lower self-control is also significant. The effects of fun as motives and lower self-control is stronger on traditional type of minor on-line delinquency. The policy implications of those results are discussed.
