Abstract
Violence Subculture, Cognitive Mediation, Anger, and Youth Violence: the effects of Family, School, and Neighborhood * Assistent Professor, Department of information sociology, Soongsil University, Ph.D in Sociology Lee, Seong-Sik* This article examines the subculture of violence thesis. This study combines the influence of violence subculture with cognitively oriented research on anger and violence for specifying the dynamics and processes of disputatious conflict situations. This study use two sets of cognitive mediators: attributional bias and hostile perception of the situation. I hypothesize that youths in the subculture of violence are more likely to perceive a conflict situation aggressively, experience a situational anger arousal, and conduct a violent behavior. Using a sample 347 male students, I examine the effects of family, school, and neighborhood subculture of violence, situational cognition, and anger on youth violence. Findings support these hypotheses. Results show that school subculture of violence has a significant indirect effect on youth violence through hostile perception of the situation and anger.
