- Abstract
- This study investigates the characteristics of emoticons and Internet language serving as counterculture in the Russian Internet community. A counterculture is a subculture whose values and norms regarding thoughts and behaviors stand against those of mainstream culture in society.
Emoticons, in general, are employed to express emotion, communicate succinctly, and help communicate as a modal code within the frame of the semiotic system. However, the use of emoticons can function as a counterculture in that the tendency toward deviation from written descriptions is against the norm of written language.
The Internet Russian also serves as a counterculture in the Runet, or so-called portmanteau of ru and net, referring to the Russian-language community on the Internet. Internet languages, such as slang, jargon, argot, etc., intentionally violate the grammatical norms of standard languages, as only members of a certain community want to share their own culture and information. The Olbanian language (Padonkaffsky language) symbolizes a typical counterculture of the Russian Internet.
