산업구조의 다양성과 지역 경제 성장: Jacobs의 산업 다양성 이론을 바탕으로

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 Jacobs(1969)가 주장한 산업 다양성 이론을 바탕으로 산업 다양성과 지역 경제성장 간의 관계를 규명해 내는 데 있다. 이러한 연구목적을 달성하기 위해서 경기도의 기초자치단체들을 대상으로 2000년-2010년 산업체 종사자 수를 기반으로 산업 다양성 지수를 산출하였다. 지역경제 성장과의 관계를 분석하기 위해 지역 경제성장에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 내생적, 외생적 경제성장 요인을 설정한 후 1인당 GRDP로 측정한 지역 경제성장과의 관계를 패널분석 모형을 통해 검증하였다. 분석 결과 경기도 내의 기초자치단체들의 경우 각 지역 내에 입지한 산업의 다양성을 증대시키는 전략이 특정 산업을 집중적으로 육성하는 것보다 지역 생산성의 증대 측면에서 효과적이라는 결과가 도출되었다. 따라서, 경기도 기초자치단체들은 그들의 산업을 다양하게 발전시킴으로써 기업들 간의 지식 이전과 혁신을 촉진시킬 수 있는 통합적인 전략에 대한 모색이 필요하다고 볼 수 있다.

This study examines the relationship between regional economic development and industrial diversification based on Jacobs’ (1969) economic theories. Using employment data by industrial sector for local governments in Korea’s Gyeonggi Province from 2000 to 2010, this study calculated industrial diversity indices such as an entropy index and a herfindahl index. This study then developed panel regression models to examine the relationship between local economic growth rates and the industrial diversification indices using the GRDP per capita, while controlling for several endogenous and neoclassical growth variables. The findings indicate that the industrial diversification index has a significant and positive influence on local economic growth. This study concludes that integrated strategies to promote industrial diversification are critical issues for ensuring local economic growth and economic stability.
