테칭 시에(Tehching Hsieh)의 ‘생애작업’에서 나타나는 시간성과 매체성

Abstract

조형예술에서 시간성은 1960년대부터 매체와 장르를 가로지르며 다양한 각도에서 해석되고 다루어져왔다. 시간에 대한 고정관념과 이데올로기로부터 탈피하려는 현대 예술가들의 시도는 뉴미디어의 일상에의 침투와 더불어, 가속화되는 정보시대의 기술 발전과 맞물려 이루어져왔다. 시간관념이란 시간에 대한 가치판단과 그 기준설정의 문제를 동반하고 있으며, 이는 예술의 주제뿐만 아니라 예술의 형식과 그 형상을 결정짓는 동인으로 작용해왔다. 불법 체류자로서, 시간제 노동자로서, 이방인 예술가로서 배제적 삶을 살아온 테칭 시에(謝德慶/Tehching Hsieh)는 제도권 밖에서 자기의지와 상관없이 주어진 외적 시스템에 의해 개인이 겪게 되는 분리감과 고립감을 직시하였다. 그리고 이를 인지하기 위한 수단으로서, 자신의 시공간을 재조직하는 퍼포먼스와 기록 작업으로 구성된 ‘생애작업’(Lifeworks)을 이행하였다. 그는 이를 통해 제도권이 만들어내는 시간의 속성과 시스템의 논리를 분해하며, 자본화된 시간 개념 아래 획일화될 수밖에 없는 삶의 리듬을 해체하는 작업에 자신을 헌신하였다. 시간, 삶, 예술의 상관관계 속에서 시에는 인간 의지와 사고체계의 한계를 명확히 인식하고, 자신을 대상화하여 바라보는 방법을 택하였다. 20여년의 세월을 구조화하여 개념화시킨 유한적 형식을 통해 시에가 드러내고자 하는 것은 개념화될 수 없는 그 모든 것, 즉 우리가 특정 가치로써 재단해버리는 시간관념 안에 무한히 잠재된 운동성과 활동성이었다.

Since 1960's, the problem of temporality in art has been dissected from diverse angles, crossing over various media and genres. Contemporary artists attempt to break away from preconceived notion and ideology of time, both driven and affected by infiltrated new media and accelerated development of information technology in everyday life. The notion of time itself postulates the problem of value judgement and the logic its criteria: this affects not only the theme, but shapes the very formation of art form. Tehching Hsieh, an illegal immigrant, a part time labourer, an alien artist perceived as 'the other', directly faced his own sense of isolation and separation caused by imposed system which he was thrown into. Over the course of 20years, he carried out his 'Lifeworks' which comprised of series of 1 -year durational performance and documentation, restructuring his own daily life, spatially and temporally. Hsieh devoted his life as an artist to deconstruct and demystify the reductive logic of time which notion has been conformed by capitalization. He objectified his sense of self within the passing time in order to cognize the very limit of human consciousness and its structure, interweaving the time, life and arts. Through performing and recording his presence and absence with extreme measures of spatio-temporal constraints, Hsieh reveals the very passage of time and its potentiality.
